Services were held Sunday at the Mansfield Funeral Home for Mrs. Florence Gates, known to her many friends as Grandma Abbott. Rev. Ira B. Allen had charge of the services and music was furnished by Mrs. L. A. Talbott and Mrs. F. R. Chantry. Pall bearers were C. R. Brewer, Aden Ireland, Harry E. Nelson, George Fritz, Dick Ruse, and Frank Higgins.
The deceased suffered a broken hip November 25, when she fell at her home in Malvern and was taken immediately to the Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, where after two weeks of intense suffering, she passed away last Thursday evening.
The following obituary was read:
Grandmother Abbott was born in Lucas County on April 16, 1855 and continued to live in that county until she married to C. J. R. Abbott on March 1, 1878. After their marriage the happy couple moved to Taylor County and later to Malvern in 1884 where they lived ever since. To this union were born five children, one child having died in infancy and Mabel known to many in Malvern, died in 1910. Mr. Abbott passed away in 1892.
"in 1902 she was married to G. S. Gates.
"Left to mourn her loss are the children, Bertha Nims, of Malvern, Mrs. Clyde Norton of Reliance, S. D. and J. A. Abbott of Fort Dodge. She also leaves six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of neighbors and friends.
"Mrs. Abbot has been a member of the Methodist Church for many years, but for the past several years has been an invalid in her home, where she was cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Nims."
