Mathias was born in Glockelberg, Bohemia (which is in modern day Czech Republic). The village is now called, Zvonková(sometimes refered to as, Zad Zvonková) in the district of Český Krumlov. Glockelberg was considered to be a forest village as it was surrounded by one.

Mathias immigrated with his parents and a few of his siblings to the United States from Hamburg, Germany in 1881. He shortly thereafter settled in Saint Paul, Minnesota where his older brother Franz was living.

He married Anna K Weiss on the 29th Oct 1889 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. They had three sons: Edward Mathias, Harold Jacob and Rudolph Joseph.

He married second, Mary Turk on 26 Feb 1908 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. They had 5 children: Adolph, Mathias, Catherine, Albert and John.
