Black Earth ~ Norbert O. Kerl, age 88, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2012 at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg, WI.

He was born on March 4, 1924 in Mazomanie, WI to Robert and Anna (Handel) Kerl, Sr. He graduated from Mazomanie High School in 1942. Norbie worked for his father, Robert Kerl Ice, Wood and Coal Business after his graduation from high school until he entered the US Army in February of 1943 at the age of 18. He was transferred to the US Air Force and served in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945. Upon returning home, he again worked for his father. In 1948, he married Wylina Evert at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived in St. Paul, Minnesota, while he trained to become a railway mail clerk. They later moved to Black Earth, WI. He worked for the Railway Mail Service for eleven years. In 1959, he became the rural route mail carrier in Black Earth and worked there for twenty one years.

Norbert and Wylina raised four children. As a family, they spent summers traveling the U.S. in their travel trailer. In 1979, they took their first trip to East Germany and found relatives.

Norbie loved basketball. He played in grade school, high school, and when he was in the military. He was an avid gardener, who took extra care to nurture his plants. He enjoyed socializing with friends at the Lockenbooth Café. Norbie enjoyed helping his children and grandchildren with their home projects. He loved playing cards and assembling puzzles. He was a member of New Heights Lutheran Church in Black Earth, and an active member in the Mickelson-Martin American Legion Post #313, and the Middleton VFW.
