Adolf Anderssein was a German chess master, considered to be the world's leading chess player in the 1850s and '60s. He was born in Breslau (Wrocław) in 1818. In 1848 he was chosen to represent Germany at the world's first International Chess Tournament in London, which he won. After losing a match to Wilhelm Steinitz in 1866, he rededicated himself to chess, becoming an even more formidable opponent despite his failing health. He died in 1879 in Breslau, an event commemorated in one German newspaper with a nineteen-page obituary.

His gave was damaged during the fighting in Breslau at the end of WWII, and afterwards was neglected by the Polish Communists because of his German heritage. However, unlike most other German graves in Breslau, his grave was not destroyed thanks to the Polish Chess federation, which had his grave moved to the Osobowicki Cemetery in 1957.
