James was wounded in action on January 20, 1971 along with five other men. His platoon leader, LT Arthur S Nabben, age 23 was killed during this firefight. James died of his wounds seven days later. The regiment his served with, B Co 2nd Bn 12th Infantry, 25th Division was ordered home and left Vietnam for the U.S. in April, 1971.
