He enlisted at Muscatine on 28 Aug 1863 to serve three years. He gave his age as 39, his occupation as laborer, and his birthplace as Halifax County, VA. Beginning in Oct 1863, he was assigned as cook. He mustered out on 15 Oct 1865 at DeValls Bluff, AR.

His muster out documents show that he was a former slave and there was a “slave claim” assigned. These records show that George had been owned by a William Robinson of Lexington, MO. As proof of ownership, Robinson showed the Army a bill of sale from when he purchased George from a William Anderson of Grundy County, MO.
