Civil War Veteran Had Been Resident (of) Topeka Since 1885
Hervey David Barrett, 81, a veteran of the Civil war and resident of North Topeka since 1885, died Friday night at his home, 1318 North Tyler street.
Mr. Barrett was born near Brattleboro, Vt., February 22, 1848. He lived in Brattleboro until nearly 16, receiving his education at that time. Before reaching his sixteenth birthday, Mr. Barrett enlisted in Company C of the Second Vermont infantry at Guilford, Vt., December 19, 1863. He participated in the battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek and others.
He was wounded three times, received promotion to the rank of corporal, then, early in 1865, to that of sergeant. he was present at the capture of Fort Fisher and at Lee's surrender.
Mustered out July 15, 1865, he worked until 1876 as a carpenter's apprentice. In that year he entered the service of the Estey Organ company of Battleboro, Vt., to take charge of building and repairing for that corporation, and remained in that capacity until March 1885.
When he first came to Topeka, he entered the employ of the Santa Fe as a passenger coach carpenter. In April 1887, he became a cabinet worker for the Rock Island, serving two and one-half years in that capacity, then becoming house carpenter foreman until 1895.
Following two years as proprietor of a grocery store in North Topeka, Mr. Barrett again entered the services of the Rock Island as foreman, later became depot carpenter, and on December 31, 1919, was retired on a pension after more than thirty-two years of service with that company.
Mr. Barrett was commander of Blut post No. 250, G.A.R., and previously had served as post commander for the unexpired term of the late C.L. Heywood.
He was married three times, first to Miss Jennie Whittaker, at Brattleboro, Vt.; secondly to a sister of his first wife, Miss Clara Whittaker, and thirdly to Mrs. Grace Van Cleave Harrop, of Topeka.
He is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Clara Schlegel, of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Bertha McMullin, of Kansas City, Mo.; an adopted son, Ernest Barrett, of Fredericksburg, Va.; six grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Bassett, of Carthage, Ill.
Funeral services will be held at the residence, 1318 North Tyler street, at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
