Eugene "Gene" E. Pappas, 83, of Harveys Lake, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday.
He was a son of the late Emma (Johns) and Nicholas Pappas. He was born in North Wilkes-Barre, where he spent his childhood and teenage years. He attended Coughlin High School.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received while fighting in the Rhineland and also served in Japan during the occupation.
Upon returning home, he was employed at Hessler Laundry, which later became Mary MacIntosh, as a route driver, where he remained working until his retirement in 1988.
He married his wife, Sophie (Sakelaridos), in 1947 and they moved to Wood Street in South Wilkes-Barre, where they raised their sons, Nicholas and Eugene.
They moved to Harveys Lake several years ago. Mr. Pappas was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Wilkes-Barre.
In his retirement years, he spent time traveling with his wife, both in the U.S. and abroad, eating out, bargain hunting and tending to his plants and vegetable gardens. He loved to have family gatherings at which he served as an able assistant cook to his wife, whipping up specialties of chocolate chip cookies, mashed potatoes and cinnamon buns.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Claire Brelsford; and two brothers, James and George Pappas.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Sophie; his sons, Eugene, of Dallas; Nicholas and his wife, Maureen, of Sweet Valley; and his beloved granddaughter, Lindsay, of Chicago; brothers, Edward, of Trucksville, and Richard of Wilkes-Barre; as well as numerous brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 32 E. Ross St., Wilkes-Barre, with Father George Dimopoulos officiating. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call today, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Harold C.
