Milton Bourne was born in 1810 in Attleboro, Massachusetts, the son of Nehemiah Bourn (1772–1834) and his wife Sarah (Barrows) Bourn (1780–1844).

Milton was married 1st at Fox River, Illinois about 1839 to Rebecca Miller (1813–1850), and he was married 2nd on August 12, 1851 probably in Illinois, to Malvina Adaline Gardner (1829–1907).

Earlier, in 1834 Milton volunteered as a missionary teacher among the Indians at Lake Superior. He returned to Vermont 2 years later and attended additional schooling, and in 1837 he became a Methodist Episcopal minister. He served Methodist churches throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. Then, because of a debilitating disease, he retired in 1863 and moved onto a small farm near Macomb, McDonough Co, Illinois.

Milton was about 55 years old when he passed away on his farm in May 1865.
