William C. Ryle served in World War I. He inherited much of the remaining Ryle estate upon his father's death in 1922. He briefly co-owned an auto accessory business in Clifton with Cyril P. Forbes. Ryle lived a life of travel and golf and was generally considered "a gentleman of leisure." Plagued by poor health in later years, he eventually became a virtual recluse. William never married, and his only surviving family were a niece and nephew, and cousins.
