The sudden death of Alonzo Smith of St. Vincent on Monday last, removes one of that townships most respected citizens. About two weeks before, he contracted a severe cold which resulted in pneumonia. For several days before death, his condition gave no hope for recovery. Mr. Smith had decided to move to Manitoba, so making preparation by advertising an auction sale for 7th February. His death on the 6th of course put a stop to the sale, and it is doubtful now whether the family will move at all.
Mr. Smith came to St. Vincent with his parents about the year 1856 when he was 14 years old. He was the eldest son of the late Garrett Smith and remained on the old homestead on the 7th line just west of Griersville. His family consists of a wife and five children.
He was a kind, agreeable neighbour and friend, and of an exceedingly pleasant disposition. Politically he was a reformer, and in religion he belonged to the Disciples. Much sympathy is felt for the family who are bereft of a very kind husband and father. The funeral took place yesterday to Meaford Cemetery.
