Mary Nelson, Widow of the Late Alonzo Smith, Passed Away on Friday, June 6th, After Spending Some 73 Years In This Section - Showed Every Consideration To Early Settlers And Was Much Esteemed By All.
The death of Mary Nelson, widow of the late Alonzo Smith, at the advanced age of 89 years and 11 months, occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Gilmore, 7th line, St. Vincent, on Friday afternoon, June 6th, and removed another of the St. Vincent pioneers whose lives were spent in building a community which we now enjoy and are proud to form a part.
The late Mrs. Smith was born in Peterboro County, near Keene, July 6th 1840, and came to Meaford with the family of her brother-in-law, the late James Stewart, in 1857. Five years later, in January, 1863, deceased was married to the late Alonzo Smith, by Rev. Mr. Hutchinson, the first residing minister in Meaford of Christ Church (Anglican). As a bride, Mrs. Smith and her husband took up their residence on the same farm as is now occupied by her son, James, 7th line. A year later they moved across the road on lot 3, concession 6, where they continued to reside until his death some thirty years ago. With the assistance of her youngest son, Lewis, farming operations were carried on until deceased lost her right arm through blood-poisoning some ten years later, when she took up her residence most of the time with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Fred Gilmore.
Deceased was one of the few people left who came to this section when the township was comparitively all forest and Meaford consisted only of a few buildings along the harbor front. Such a vast transfiguaration in one lifetime hardly seems possible, but such has been the outcome of proper building by pioneer settlers, whose sacrifice and privation brought its own reward.
The late Mrs. Smith, besides doing her part in community service, was a Bible student of note and was a member of the Church of Christ for over 55 years, always adhering to its teachings by constant study and faithful attendance at the Throne of Grace.
For a life well spent, she enjoyed the high esteem of a wide circle of friends, who deeply mourn her passing.

Deceased is survived by two sons and two daughters:- James, on the old homestead, 7th line; Lewis, of Hawarden, Sask. and Mrs. Hugh Rogers, Manson, Man., and Mrs. Fred Gilmore, 7th line. Two daughters and one son predeceased her some years ago. An only surviving brother resides in Calgary, Alberta.
The funeral was held from the home of Mrs. Gilmore on Monday, 9th inst., to Lakeview Cemetery. Mr. Cauble, of Toronto Church of Christ, officiated at the house and grave. The pallbearers were her six grandsons: Burgess, and Harold Adams, Alonzo and Aubrey Smith, Lyman Gilmore and Russel Storey. Included in the floral tributes were: Gates Ajar, the family; pillow from the grandchildren and sprays from the following, Mr. and Mrs. Peter R. Davey and Mr. John York, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Pollock, Miss. Harvey, and the Minniehill U.F.W.O.
