Charles McKim was born on July 30th 1846. At the age of 15 years and 6 months he was mustered into service on January 28th 1862. He was placed into Company K of The 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, also known as "Birney's Zouaves" These men were firemen from Philadelphia. Company K was made up of Gymnists and had a slightly different "Gymnist Zouave" uniform early on. Charles McKim was wounded at Cold Harbor Virgina on June 1st 1864, he re-enlisted on January 28th 1865 and was transferred to The 82 Pennsylvania Volunteers.
Charles McKim died on February 8th 1917 at the age of 70, and was buried at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Burlington, NJ. He is in Section I, Lot 58, Grave 4.
