Flying Officer Edward WELTERS lost his life on 2 March 1956 in a tragic accident that occurred when four of the five 4 (F) Wing (Baden-Soellingen) 'Sky Lancers' aerobatic team members were practicing; they were performing their intricate flight manoeuvres over Germany's Rhine Valley. At approx 2:20 p.m. the team of four F-86 Sabres crashed simultaneously into the ground after pulling out of a loop in some low clouds near the Vosges Mountains southwest of Strasbourg. Because of illness, the fifth 'Sky Lancer' team member was unable to fly that day.
The 'Sky Lancers' who perished in this F-86 Sabre aircraft accident were:-
Flying Officer John Hendrikson ADAMS,
Flying Officer Frederick Karl AXTELL,
Flying Officer Joseph Dale McLARTY and
Flying Officer Edward WELTERS.

Son of Barbara Welters of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, and the late Frank Welters. Brother of Frank, Randolph, Anthony, Michael, John, Mrs. Katherine Burham, Mrs. Cousineau, Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Selzer, Mrs. Thesise and Mrs. Lees.

Flying Officer Edward Welters is commemorated on Page 72 of the 'In the Service of Canada' Book of Remembrance.

Flying Officer E. WELTERS is one of 107 airmen's names inscribed on the Honour Roll on the Sabre Pilots Memorial at RCAF Memorial Museum in Trenton, Ontario, Canada; the unveiling ceremony of the Sabre Pilots Memorial took place on 19 June 1998.
