"Funeral services of Mrs. Susan Smith were held yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Sanders of Millfield. Interment was made in the McDougall Cemetery near Amesville. Mrs. Smith died Sunday morning at the Sanders home." - Athens Messenger, June 1, 1921, p. 5, c. 5.

"Susan R. King, daughter of Job S. and Elizabeth Mc Cance King, was born at Plymouth in Washington County, Ohio December 18, 1842 and died at Millfield, Ohio on May 29th 1921, aged 78 years, five months and 11 days. She was united in marriage to Charles S. Smith on March 10, 1860. To this union was born nine children, seven of whom are now living: Mrs. Etta Lyon of Logan, Ohio, Charles of Kansas City, Missouri, Mrs. Linnie Brown, of San Francisco, California, Mrs. Hallie Crittenden of Coolidge, Kansas, Herbert and Clyde of Denver, Colorado and Mrs. Bertha Sanders of Millfield. There is also left one brother and two sisters: Mrs. L. W. Sanders of Millfield, Mrs. W. R. Wilson of Lancaster and B. W. King of Kirksville. Also nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Her husband and two daughters preceded her in death. Charles S. Smith died May 7, 1883, an infant daughter died February 21, 1879, a married daughter, Jess, died the same day as her mother, May 19, 24 years ago. In the early spring of 1902, she returned to Denver, Colorado to take care of her infant granddaughter, Effa, the daughter of Herbert Smith and who has ever since received her greatest love and devotion. She died at the home of her youngest daughter, Bertha, at Millfield, where she had been staying for several months, tenderly cared for by her son-in-law, Clarence Sanders, and two daughters, Mrs. Sanders and Mrs. Brown. She also leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss.
