Mrs. Carroll Dies in Douglas; Funeral Tuesday

Graveside services for Mrs. Mary Leona (Barnes) Carroll, 84, were held at the Lusk Cemetery Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Carroll died Friday at the Michael Manor Nursing and Convalescent home in Douglas.

Mrs. Carroll was born November 15, 1885, in Sibley, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert E. Barnes and Matilda M. Spencer Barnes. She moved to Lusk with her parents, three brothers and three sisters in 1908. The parents and three older sister filed on homesteads near Node, which is now part of the Kaan Corporation ranch. The two brothers and younger sister homesteaded in the Lightning and Walker Creek area.

She married James E. Carroll July 3, 1911, at Harrison, Nebr. They were the parents of four children, three boys, Herbert James, Henry Wallace, David Emerson, and one daughter, Marguerite Leona.

They homesteaded on Lightning Creek and moved to Lusk in 1918 where she lived with her children until 1942 and resided in Lander and Douglas in the past.

Her parents, two sisters, three brothers, husband and two sons died previously.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Marguerite Backer, Tucson, Ariz.; one son, David of Tucson; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Graves, Norwalk, Calif.; Mrs. Dorothy Spencer, Sioux City, Iowa; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
