In the 1860 census, Alfred (30) was living in Sarsfield Plantation, Aroostook County, Maine. The census states that his birthplace was New Brunswick. In the household was his wife Jane (35) who was born to Porter and Rebecca Ross in about 1824 in Canada. Children in the home were Sarah R. (9), Marcella (7), Esther (5), Fremont (4), A.C. (2), William (1 month).

In 1860, Albert enlisted in the Company C of the 16th Maine Infantry Regiment as a private. He transferred on October 13, 1864 into Company K of the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment. He mustered out on July 16, 1865, 1865.

In 1870, household members were Albert (40), Jane (45), Rebecca (19), Marcella (17), Esther (15), Fremont (13), AC (12), Maximillian (10), Anna (7), and Eugenia (2).

In 1900, Albert was living in Fort Fairfield, Maine with his daughter Eugenia (teacher) and granddaughter Amy (16) and Alfred Merithew (servant). He lived next door to his son Maximillian and his family.

Albert claimed his pension on May 25, 1904.
