Aboard the S. S. Denmark on 10 September 1872, Michel, age 21, arrived at the Port of New York from the Port of Le Havre, France, with his brother, Philip Sengel, age 18. A cooper by trade, Michel worked at the Gambrinus Cooperage Works, owned and operated by his brother Philip. He was an expert cooper who built whisky barrels, large distillery casks and tubs, etc., but the leading specialty was vats and casks for breweries.
On 25 February, 1885, in Louisville, Michel took the oath of Allegiance to become a naturalized American citizen.
Both Michel and Philip were active members of the society, The Cercle de l'Union Franchise de Louisville.
