Edmund P. Backhaus, 71, of St. Nazianz, died Monday morning, March 14, at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Christianson-Deja Funeral Home and 11:15 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. The Rev. Lester Groeschl will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Backhaus was born Nov. 25, 1911, at St. Nazianz, son of the late Nick and Katherine Schwoerer Backhaus. He attended St. Gregory School and married Marcella
Seiple June 11, 1935, at Spring Valley. Mr. Backhaus operated the St. Nazianz Opera House until 1965.
Survivors include his wife, a son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Dolores Backhaus of Kohler, a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Karl Stoeckigt of Green Bay; a sister, Mrs. Rose Wesling of Plymouth and five grandchildren. A daughter, a brother and a sister preceded him in death.
Friends may call at Christianson-Deja Funeral Home, St. Nazianz, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A parish prayer service will be 8 p.m.

Backhaus, Edmund P. (Nov. 25, 1911-March 14, 1983 –husband of Marcella Seipel [married June 11, 1935 at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Spring Valley, Town of Meeme] –son of Nicholas Backhaus and Katherine Schwoerer –tavern keeper –on March 4, 1952 purchased the Opera House at 204 South Fourth Avenue –ran this establishment until selling on Jan. 5, 1965 to Paul Schnell –on Sept. 20, 1940 purchased the house at 106 South Fourth Avenue from his father Nic Backhaus –lived here until selling to Miller Farms in 1949 –on May 28, 1947 purchased the vacant lot at 104 West Birch Street and had a house built –lived here until selling on June 4, 1954 –on March 8, 1965 purchased the house at 111 West Court –lived in this house until his death in 1983 –his widow Marcella continued to live here until selling on Oct. 30, 1987 –died from "myocardial infarction, acute") – 4-9-33
