He grew up in Audubon County and attended country schools. He was baptized and confirmed and was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Audubon. He attended Grandview College in Des Moines, Iowa.
On May 23, 1917 he married Lena Michaelsen. They farmed in Douglas Township until they retired into Audubon in 1958. They became residents of the Friendship Home in 1975. For several years he was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Audubon.
Preceding him in death were his parents; 1 sister, Anna Blohm and 1 brother, Matt Mathiesen.
Survivors include his wife, Lena; Son and Daughter-in-law, Stanley and Dorothy Mathisen, all of Audubon, Iowa; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren, 2 sisters: Mary Blohm and Christena Shupe, both of Audubon, Iowa; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Burial: Arlington Heights Cemetery, Audubon, Iowa
