Mr. Clarkson was born in Chestertown, Maryland and lived 63 years in Swarthmore.
He was employed more than 30 years at the former Mary Lyons School in Swarthmore until it closed, and continued to work on the premises during World War II, when the Navy took over the buildings.
He then became custodian at Swarthmore College, retiring in 1955.
He and his wife, Della, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December, 1966.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Chestertown, and was affiliated with Wesley AME Church, Swarthmore, where he was a steward, and a member of the senior choir and male chorus.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a foster son, Samuel Jews Clarkson of Yeadon, and two brothers, Douglas of Media and Hiram of Chestertown, Maryland.
