Evelyn Walters went to be with her Lord on June 28, 2011, after a short illness. Evelyn was born on January 23, 1941 in Ace, Texas to Dovie and Watson Walters. She was the youngest of six children. She was raised in Cleveland, Texas and graduated from Cleveland High School in 1959. Evelyn moved to Houston after graduation and eventually started her own family. In 1972, she and her family moved to Kingwood where they were early pioneers in the "Livable Forest". She raised two children in Kingwood and was in new home sales for Friendswood Development Company. After moves to Santa Fe, New Mexico and Durango, Colorado she returned to settle amongst friends in Kingwood.
Evelyn was an active member of Kingwood United Methodist Church for many years where she volunteered weekly in the Society of Saint Stephen ministry. After Tropical Storm Allison devastated the area in June of 2001 she spent countless hours assisting those in need through various community programs. In recent years, she spent a substantial amount of her time volunteering with Family Time Foundation with special emphasis on The Door. In 2002, Evelyn was honored by Family Time Foundation with the Women of Achievement award. She was also a member of the Kingwood Women's Club, raising funds for various charities in Kingwood. She gave of her time and her heart.
Although she loved her volunteer work, her children and grandchildren were her greatest pride and joy. Her daughter Tracy is married to Jim Moore and lives in Houston, Texas and her son Mark Massey is married to Lisa and lives in Castle Pines, Colorado. Her stepson Chris Wood is married to Moe and lives in Japan. To the world she was known as Evelyn, but to her grandchildren she was always "MiMi". Evelyn has six grandchildren who were the loves of her life, Courtney Moore (20), Connor Moore (17), Mackenzie Massey (6), Alexa Massey (4), Christian Massey (5 months) and Sarah Wood (9). They will miss MiMi more than words can say and "high tea" will never be the same.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents and her brothers: Warren, Billy and Lloyd Walters. She is survived by her sister, Faye and her husband Harvey Hawthorne of Shepherd, Texas, her brother Donald and his wife Billie of Pasadena, Texas, and sisters-in-law Janice Walters and Ann Hefner, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at Kingwood Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, June 30, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at Kingwood United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 1, at 2:00 PM. It will be followed by a reception to celebrate Evelyn's life at Kingwood Country Club from 3:00 until 5:00 PM. A private graveside service will be held on Friday at the family cemetery in Schwab City, Texas. In memory of Evelyn, donations may be made to Family Time Foundation, 101 East Main Street, Humble, Texas 77338.
