"Attached is a picture of Oliver Stevens and his wife, Elizabeth Sumner Winn. Oliver was born in Newport, New Hampshire 11 Mar 1783, and died in Greensborough, Georgia 16 Jun 1853. He was a school teacher and a cotton planter. On a business trip to Georgia he met Elizabeth Winn. He married her and moved to Georgia becoming a member of the Midway church. My Bacon ancestors were in the group that settled in Midway and started this church - attached is a sign with the dates of their movement from New England. Oliver is buried at the Midway Church cemetery. If you enlarge the picture of his gravestone you can read the inscription which, by today's standards is lengthy! I am not sure if his wife's grave is nearby... or not. There was one of an Eliza Winn but no mention of Oliver and they are not beside each other.

I have the daguerreotype of this photo, but for many years it was labeled on the back with the name of a Bacon who I was not related to - so I was unsure who was in the photo and thought perhaps it was a distant cousin. But, oddly enough, I connected with another online researcher who sent me this picture and voila, I found out the folks were Oliver and Elizabeth! I cleaned up the photo and sent back a better copy. He shared with me that in the picture, Oliver is holding a letter they received from their son who was a missionary in a far off land, and Elizabeth is holding a necklace with their son's picture on it. My daguerreotype was so old that I had been unable to see these details until I was sent the photo. Oliver and Elizabeth are my 3-great grandparents through their daughter Louisa Stevens who married Edwin Henry Bacon.

In the picture of the church, taken from the graveyard, Oliver's stone is in the row to the right of the large tree - you can find it by its distinctive shape. Midway sells a little paper, hand-held fan of this shot and Oliver's grave is in it. We sent a copy of Oliver & Elizabeth's picture for the museum there. To the stone's left is a little marker, also attached, of Louisa's brother Sumner W. Stevens (I suspect Winn was his middle name) who must have died young."
