James Hardy Witherington, son of William Alexander and Sarah Hasseltine Witherington, was born in Laurens County, near Dexter, Georgia, on October 4, 1866 and died in Dublin, Georgia, February 19, 1931 and was laid to rest in Northview Cemetery, Dublin, Georgia.
James Hardy Witherington attended the Mt. Carmel School and New Ebenezer College and later went into the mercantile business and was Vice-President of the Four-Seasons Department Store, of Dublin, Georgia , one of the largest in Middle Georgia. At the time of his death he was secretary to the Laurens County Commissioners, which office he had held for a number of years, He married Miss Exie Griffith.
James Hardy Witherington was a member of and a Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Dublin, Georgia, and was a Sunday School Superintendent of that Church for quite a number of years.
Past Master James Hardy Witherington was a member of Harmony Chapter Number 56, Royal Arch Masons; a member of and a Past Commander of Olivet Commandery Number 27, Knights Templar of Dublin, Georgia and a member of Al Sihah Temple A. A. O. N. M. S. of Macon, Georgia
Past Master James Hardy Witherington received all his "Blue Lodge" Degrees in Cochran Lodge Number 217 of Cochran, Georgia, during the year 1889. He was a charter Member of Dexter Lodge Number340, F. & A. M. He affiliated with Laurens Lodge Number 75, F. & A.M., April 7, 1896 and served as Master of Laurens Lodge Number 75, F. & A.M., during the years 1900 and 1901.
