Excerpted from the Rossland Miner of May 25, 1905 (P1C4):
DEATH OF THE DEPTHS
Two Men Killed and Three Wounded in the Mines.
A Ghastly Record Made Inside of Eighteen Hours.
Two violent deaths and three men severely hurt..was the record made in the Rossland mines yesterday between midnight on Tuesday and last evening at 5 o’clock. The first accident was the one which occurred in the Josie mine, in which Hugh Bennett lost his life as a result of a fall of 50 feet through a timber chute...The third accident, which resulted in the death of one man and the wounding of one man and the wounding of two others, occurred at 4:30 o’clock p. m. on the 1,000-foot level of the Le Roi. Stephen Walsh, a shoveler...was using a pick...The sharp point of the pick struck the cap or the dynamite, and then there was a blinding explosion. The blast threw rock and dust into Walsh’s face and neck…and he fell to the ground a corpse…

From the Rossland Miner of May 26, 1905 (P4C3):
A cablegram has been received from the parents of Hugh Bennett in Ireland, directing that his remains be buried here. The interment will take place on Saturday morning, at 10:30 o’clock.
