Excerpted from the Rossland Miner of July 19, 1911 (P1C5):
FATALITY AT JOSIE MINE
JOHN BECKMAN IS KILLED AND ALEX BYERS INJURED BY BLAST.
A sad fatality occurred on Monday night at the Josie mine, the immunity from serious accidents which that property had enjoyed for several years being suddenly ended.
John Beckman and Alex Byers were at work in a drift on the 300 foot-level, the latter attending to the crank, the former to the chuck of the machine. They were at work on the lifters, as the bottom holes are termed, when the blast occurred.
Byers escaped with painful injuries to his face and eyes, but Beckman, being the lower of the two, received the full force of the blast, and must have been killed instantly…What really caused the accident can only be conjectured, but Byers says they drilled into a missed hole…Beckman leaves a wife and several children.
The funeral will be held at 10 o’clock on Thursday morning.

From the Rossland Miner of July 22, 1911 (P8C2):
Funeral of Late John Beckman
Many Sympathizers Attend Interment of Mine Fatality Victim
The interment took place on Thursday morning of John Beckman, the victim of the fatality at the Josie mine on Monday evening.
The sad ceremony was attended by officials and many members of the Rossland Miners’ Union, and by a large crowd of intimate friends of the deceased’s family.
A brief but impressive service was conducted at the residence by the Rev. W. P. Ewing, and during its course the hymns “Rock of Ages” and “Jesus, Lover of My Soul” were sung.
The management of the Josie mine had very kindly given permission to all who desired to attend the funeral to lay off, as as a result many of deceased’s workers took the opportunity of paying their last respects to their departed comrade.
Among those present were Assistant General Manager Lionel E. Hill, Superintendent A. Burnett, and M. Snyder, deceased’s shift boss. Mrs. A. Burnett, who, through a trying time, had been a source of great comfort and help to the bereaved wife and family, was also present.
After the service at the house, a large number accompanied the cortege to the cemetery where the last sad rites were briefly performed.
The arrangements for the funeral were carried out by the Miners’ Union.
