Christel, Richard (Feb. 2, 1842-March 23, 1925 [birth date from birth record] –husband of Mary Proell 1845-1868 [married Feb. 28, 1867 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton] –after Mary died on July 13, 1868, Richard re-married to Mary Stahl [married Feb. 6, 1869 at St. Gregory] –son of Norbert Christel and Amalia Zeidler –born Einseidel, Bohemia –immigrated to the US on the boat Adler departing from the Port of Bremen, Germany, arriving in the Port of Baltimore on July 30, 1855 in company of his parents and 7 siblings –on Dec. 24, 1861, Richard purchased the 88 acres of the N1/2 of the NE1/4 of Section 4, Town of Schleswig and created a farmstead at 21207 Townline Road –on June 11, 1869, he purchased the 40 acres of the SW1/4 of the SE1/4 of Section 33, Town of Eaton –this purchase increased his farm to 128 acres –from Feb. 5, 1873 to Sept. 8, 1877, Richard owned the saloon and store that once existed in Steinthal in Section 33, Town of Eaton –this store also served as the Steinthal post office –Richard was listed as the post master from May 21, 1875 to April 22, 1876 –on Feb. 20, 1913, Richard sold his 128 acre farm centered at 21207 Townline Road to his son Joseph Christel and his wife Caroline Schnuell –on Nov. 5, 1904, Richard purchased the 119-acre farm centered at 16319 County C in Section 30, Town of Liberty –he owned this farm until selling on July 10, 1909 to his son Albert Christel –from May 5, 1906 to March 11, 1911, Richard owned the 80 acre farm centered in the SW1/4 of the SW1/4 of Section 28, Town of Liberty –Richard sold this farm to his son Edward Christel –on March 4, 1904, he purchased the house at 112 South Second Avenue in St. Nazianz –Richard lived in this house until his death in 1925 –his wife Mary continued to live here until her death on Sept. 21, 1931 –on Nov. 27, 1907, Richard purchased from the Roman Catholic Religious Association the house with basket weaving shop at 103 West Birch Court in St. Nazianz –after this purchase, the house on this lot was razed and a Sears and Roebuck house built –on June 11, 1908 this new house was sold to Joseph Gutman –died from “exhaustion in the course of senile psychosis –bladder sinus”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 3, Row 1, Lot 8 –stone] [first marriage record Manitowoc 4-29] [second marriage record Manitowoc 4-30] [death record Manitowoc 21-435]

St. Nazianz – Richard Christel died at his home Monday evening, the demise being due to infirmities incident to old age. The funeral will be held Friday morning at 9:30
with services at St. Gregory Catholic Church, the Rev. Deibele officiating.

Mr. Christel was born in Germany in February, 1842 and came to this country at the age of twelve. HE came to St. Nazianz twenty-one years ago when he disposed of his farm. He was married March 6, 1869 to Mary Stahl who with eight children survives to mourn his death.

The children are Mrs. John Krupp of St. Anne, Mrs. Andrew Madson and Mrs. Katie Simon of St. Nazianz; Richard Christel of Appleton, Joseph W., Albert and Henry Christel of St. Nazianz and Edward Christel of School Hill. Twenty-nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive him besides three brothers, William F. Christel of Valders, Isadore and Louis of Minneapolis.
