Christel, Wendel Joseph (Dec. 12, 1852-Oct. 5, 1922 [birth date comes from birth record] –husband of Christina Kaiser [married July 20, 1880 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton] –son of Norbert Christel and Amalia Christel –born Einsidl, Bohemia –immigrated to the US on the boat Adler departing from the Port of Bremen, Germany on May 24, 1855, arriving in the Port of Baltimore in company of his parents and 7 siblings –farmer –from Oct. 6, 1884 until his death in 1922 owned the 40 acres of the NW1/4 of the NE1/4 of Section 36, Town of Eaton –on Oct. 22, 1884 purchased from his father-in-law Peter Kaiser the 60 acre farm at 8815 Greendale Road in Section 36, Town of Eaton –on March 6, 1895 purchased the 40 acre John Wagner farm at 8322 Greendale Road in Section 26, Town of Eaton and made this farm part of his larger farm at 8815 Greendale Road –after this purchase the original farmstead at 8322 Greendale Road was razed –on Oct. 18, 1916 sold the 100 acre farm at 8815 Greendale Road to his son Joseph Christel –on Feb. 28, 1916 purchased the 80 acre farm at 8734 Greendale Road in Section 35, Town of Eaton from the widow Katherine Gellings –on Sept. 14, 1922, just days before his death, sold this farm to his son Rudolph Christel –on April 21, 1894 purchased 24 acres of vacant land on the north side of Newton Road in Section 27, Town of Eaton –owned this land until his death in 1922 –with the death of his widow Christine in 1938, this still vacant land was sold by his children on April 20, 1939 to Aaron and Catherine Schema –on Feb. 26, 1906 purchased the 80 acre farm at 19215 Newton Road in Section 35, Town of Eaton from Otto Bratz –on Oct. 18, 1916 sold this 80 acre farm to his son Max Christel –on Nov. 7, 1903 purchased the Gregor House Saloon at 119 South Second Avenue in St. Nazianz from Michael Breu –ran this establishment until selling to William Vandeloo on Aug. 9, 1905 –on Oct. 15, 1910 purchased the house of Dr. William Schmitz at 222 West Main Street in St. Nazianz –lived here until selling on May 27, 1916 –on Jan. 24, 1914 purchased the house at 110 South Fourth Avenue in St. Nazianz –this house was one of the few buildings in the area to survive the fire of April 5, 1918 –Wendel lived in this house until his death in 1922 –his widow Christine continued to live here until her death on Jan. 3, 1938 –died from “carcinoma of sigmoid flexor”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 3, Row 2, Lot 8 –stone] [marriage record Manitowoc 4-165] [death record Manitowoc 19-458]

WENDEL CHRISTEL

Wendelin Christel died at his home two miles southwest of St. Nazianz on Thursday of last week, after a lingering illness with cancer.

He was born in Austria and came to America in 1855 with his parents, who settled in Calumet county. He was 70 years of age. He married in 1880 to Christina Kaiser, and the couple made their home on the farm where Mr. Christel passed away.

Deceased is survived by his widow, one daughter and five sons,namely: Mrs. Wm. Rappel, Peter, Joseph, Max and Rudolph, all of St. Naziana and Hugo of Quarry. Also five brothers, Charles of Milwaukee, Wm. F. and Lewis of Valders, Richard of St. Nazianz, and Isidor of Minnesota and 15 grandchildren.

He was a member of the Catholic Knights and members of School Hill and of Meeme were present at the funeral, which took place on Monday at 9:30 o'clock, Rev. Deibele officiating.
