Sherman Wininger met his first wife, Lucille Flener, when they were in college together. They married in April 1930 and had 4 children: Clara, Agatha, James Thomas, and Joseph. Lucille's father, Perry Flener, had set the couple up with a farm but Sherman wasn't cut out to be a farmer. Sherman and Lucille divorced. He moved on and married Ellen Barber in 1946 and had a second family.
