Archbishop of Wrocław 1972-1974.Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Radlin in the then German Empire, Bolesław Kominek was the son of a miner, the eldest of ten children. Receiving his education at the Catholic University of Kraków and the Institut Catholique of Paris, he was ordained priest in September 1927 in Katowice, where he assisted Polish refugees during the Second World War. Named apostolic administrator of Opole by the Holy See in 1945, the Communist regime forbade him to conduct his ministry and furthermore debarred him from receiving his episcopal consecration following his appointment as bishop of the titular see Sofene in 1951. Being consecrated clandestinely three years later at the episcopal palace of Przemyšl, he resided in Wrocław from 1956 onward when his consecration was made public. Transferred to the titular see of Vaga, he was promoted to the titular archbishopric see of Euchaitae in 1962 and ultimately named archbishop of the metropolitan see of Wrocław on June 28, 1972. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest with the title of Santa Croce in via Flaminia i the consistory of March 5 of the following year. He died suddenly of a heart attack a year later.
