Gilbert was the son of Rufus James Palen and Eliza Catherine DeWitt Palen. He was raised at Palenville, New York where his father was a prominent citizen and later a United States Congressman. Gilbert married to Elizabeth Gould on 19 September 1860 at Roxbury, New York. They made their home first at Canadensis, New York and relocated To Tunkhannock, New York about 1870 where he founded a tannery. The family relocated permanently to Philadlephia, Pennsylvania about 1877 where he was a physician and head of Starky & Palen, a chemical establishment. Gilbert and Elizabeth were the parents of four children; Anna Palen, Rufus Palen, Gilbert Joseph Palen, and Walter Gould Palen.
