Ruth Berger Rites Set

Mrs. Ruth Norris Berger, widow of the late Dr. Alexander J. Berger, died at 4:10 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.

She was born in Arkansas City, April 1, 1897, and was a lifetime resident. She was the daughter of George E. Norris and Mary Ann Logan Norris.

She married Dr. Berger in Arkansas City. He died Nov. 2, 1943.

She was a member of the First United Presbyterian church, Johnson Guild, Eula Sleeth Guild, Study America Club, Soroptimist and Cowley County Community Junior College Endowment Fund.

A member for 40 years of Betty Bonney Chapter, Daughters of American Revolution, she was elected state register at the 1933 annual state conference in Dodge City, held this office for five years, and in 1940 was elected regent of the Kansas Society which office she held for four years. Mrs. Berger served as register, vice regent, and regent of the local chapter.

She was elected to the office of vice president general of the National Society of DAR at the Contential Congress national convention in New York City in 1944, and was appointed chairman of genealogical records.

In 1946, Mrs. Berger was a candidate for register general of the National Society, but withdrew because of illness. She was also a member of the National Resolutions Committee for the erection of Memorial Bell Tower at Valley Forge - in all, she completed six years of service on the National Board of Management.

As a member of the American Red Cross, she was honored for her 50 years of service.

She also served several terms on the board of directors of the Salvation Army.

She collaborated on and co-authored the Centennial book "Between Two Rivers," and was active in centennial activities.

There are no immediate survivors.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the First United Presbyterian church with Dr. Rheinhold Schmidt Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery.

Erdman-Oldroyd Funeral Home has charge.

The casket will not be opened at the service.
