Sylvester Shank, of Co. K, enrolled Nov. 12, 1861 in Angola by N.S. Bennett as a Private; mustered in Nov. 22, 1861 in Ft. Wayne by Lt. Stansbury at age 20. He was 5Œ 8 tall, light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. Born Aug. 6, 1844 in Seneca Co., OH, employed as a farmer, married to Mary J. Giles, resident of Flint, in Steuben Co., IN. Mustered out after serving 3 years Nov. 22, 1864 in Chattanooga, TN. Notes: Was 17 at muster in. Brother to Norman. General Court Martialed on May 28, 1863, for being absent without leave Mar. 24, 1862, from Henderson, KY, hospital on a sick furlough; went home and stayed there until arrested Dec. 1, 1863, and returned Dec. 10, 1863; found guilty of absence between Mar. 24, 1862-Jul. 2, 1862, and lost pay for that period. Mustered out on expiration of term of service. He filed Invalid Pension Application to receive Pension Certificate #266303 Oct. 1, 1873. Resident of Hillsdale, Hillsdale Co., MI, 1880-1898 where he died Nov. 1, 1907. Death certificate has Shanks. Buried there in Oak Grove Cemetery, Sec. 13/Lot 418.
