SPRAGUE, M.D.,, CHARLES CAMERON Died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, September 17, 2005. He lived a public and extraordinary life. He came from a large family and he leaves behind relatives and friends who will miss him deeply. Charlie, born to George and Minna Sprague in Dallas on November 14, 1916 was the youngest and last surviving of eight children. He is survived by his devoted family including his wife of 14 years, Alayne Watson Sprague, his only child, Cynthia Cameron Sprague Hardesty, her husband, Steve Hardesty and two grandchildren, Cameron Elizabeth Hardesty and Michael Sprague Hardesty of Plano. He was predeceased by his first wife of 42 years, Margaret Dickson Sprague in 1986, and his second wife, Joanne Likes Sprague in 1991. Dr. Sprague graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1943, after distinguishing himself academically and athletically as an undergraduate at Southern Methodist University. After serving in the Navy in World War II, he began his medical career at Tulane University of Medicine becoming Dean in 1963. Dr. Sprague returned to Dallas in 1967, to serve as Dean of Southwestern Medical Center. He became president in 1971 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1986. At that time he became president and chief executive officer of Southwestern Medical Foundation. At the time of his death, he was the foundation's chairman emeritus. During a lifelong medical career, Dr. Sprague's leadership was recognized with several honorary degrees, the naming of Distinguished Chairs of medicine, numerous other awards, and the naming of the Charles Cameron Sprague Clinical Science Building at Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. In addition to his medical career, Dr. Sprague was a leader in the philanthropic community. He served on the Board of Directors for Southern Methodist University, the Hoblitzelle Foundation, Planned Parenthood, Shelter Ministries, Interfaith Housing, The Senior Source, Grace Presbyterian Village and other committees and advisory boards. He was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church of Dallas where he served as an Elder and a trustee of the First Presbyterian Foundation. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by devoted step-children Betty Heckman of Getzville, New York; Susan Nelson of Pittsboro, North Carolina; Victoria Nelson of Cohasset, Massachusetts;and Laura Reynolds of Mesquite, Texas; their husbands and children. Dr. Sprague is also survived by nieces and nephews including Barbara Frazier of Memphis, Tennessee; John Brown of Orinda, California; Paul Brown of Edmond, Oklahoma; Frank Sprague of Hamilton County, Texas; and Kurth Sprague of Johnson City, Texas. Charlie's public memory will live on in the institutions he helped build and the many professional and private lives he touched. His private memory will be long held by his family and friends, those who share his legacy and love. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 408 Park Avenue, Dallas, Texas at 2:00 o'clock, Thursday, September 22, 2005. Parking will be available in the church garage.
