Marguerite E. Goodwin, 97, of Lubbock, passed away at Manna Acres Assisted Living Home on Friday, Feb. 1, 2008. Graveside services are planned in Fort Hancock on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at 1 p.m., under the direction of Hampton Valley Mortuary of Fabens, Texas. Local family will receive visitors in the Simpson home at 5209 72nd Street, Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, from 7 - 8:30 p.m.

Ms. Goodwin was born on Sept. 13, 1910 to parents, George E. and Pearl Ragland, in the home of her grandparents, Edward Rufus and Sarah Jane Ragland, near Graham. Reared in or near Electra, she graduated from Electra High School at the age of 15. She attended Texas Wesleyan College and received a temporary teaching certificate and taught one year in a one room school at Rocky Point before returning to TWC to complete her B.A. degree in 1930. This was the beginning of nearly 50 years of teaching for Ms. Goodwin. She taught near Burkburnett, in Jermyn, Delwin, Wilbarger Co., Vernon and Paducah, before moving to Lubbock in 1956. Her Lubbock career began with one year at Chris Harwell Elementary and one year at Bayless Elementary. She returned to school and received a Master's Degree in Education from Texas Technological College in 1958. Then, she completed 17 years as a third grade teacher at Parson's Elementary, retiring from LISD in 1976. Ms. Goodwin worked substitute teaching in the Kansas City, Blue Springs, Mo. and Freeport, Texas areas for the next three years then accepted a full time teaching position in the 5th grade in Fort Hancock until 1988. Again, she continued to substitute in Fort Worth and Lubbock until the age of 84. Marguerite lived in Fort Hancock loving the view of the mountains of Mexico from her front porch until 2004 when she returned to her Lubbock home. Marguerite was married to Wylie Culbertson, 1931-1937, and Vernon Goodwin, 1945 - 1958. Marguerite became a Christian as a young woman and was a member of the Methodist church throughout her life.

Ms. Goodwin is preceded in death by one daughter, L. Kay Fortune (1998); one son, James E. Culbertson (1992); one grandson, Shannon Fortune (1989); and two brothers, John R. Ragland of Lubbock and infant Clopton Ragland of Young Co.

She is survived by one son, Doug Goodwin (Joy) of Blue Springs, Mo.; one brother, Archie Ragland (Lou) of Allen; six grandchildren, Debbie Simpson (Ronnie) of Lubbock, Wes Culbertson of Beaumont, Daphne Crownover (Glen) of Fort Worth, Chris Goodwin (Jamie) of Kansas City, Mo., Michelle Rayburn (Bill) and Melissa Anderson (Joe), all of Blue Springs, Mo.; four step grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
