Enlisted as a private on Sep. 23, 1862 in Co. N (Captain James S.A. Crawford), 14th Virginia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. Crawford's company was known as the "Night Hawk Rangers." (Note: In Jan. 1863, the Night Hawk Rangers would be re-designated as Co. F, 17th VA Cavalry).

On Nov. 25-26, 1862, at Lewis Mill, Greenbrier Co., VA, the 14th VA Cavalry (companies C, H, I, M, and N), while assigned to Albert G. Jenkins' Brigade, was routed by Federal cavalry. Private Edward Jacoby was captured and taken prisoner on the 26th.

On Feb. 8, 1862, Edward Jacoby, age 26, died of Typhoid Fever at the Alton Federal Military Prison, Alton, IL.

Edward Jacoby is listed on a monument in the cemetery at North Alton. The monument lists 1,534 names of Confederate soldiers that are known to have died there.
