A former slave, born near Jerusalem Court House in Southampton Co., VA. He was working in a hospital at Fredericksburg, VA before he came north to Washington, DC, where he enlisted on 14 Aug 1862 and was mustered in as a cook with the US Navy. He served until 30 June 1865, when discharged. His pension papers show that he was a steerage cook on the USS Princeton and USS Wissahickon.

He was living in Boston, MA prior to being admitted into the Togus Soldiers Home on 23 May 1907, where he died seven months later. In 1900 Boston, MA census, a laborer, age 58, born June 1842 VA, single (Home records listed him as a widower).
