OX TRAIN IN 1852.

INDEPENDENCE, ORE., MARCH 11 (Special)
Mrs. F.A. Patterson, pioneer resident
of Oregon, died at her home here at
3:30 this morning. She would have
been, 85 years old in May.

Mrs. Patterson, whose maiden name was
Caroline Tatom, born in Missouri, May
28 1841. She crossed the plains by ox
team with her parents in 1852, when she
12 years old. The family settled first
in Kings Valley, Benton County.

[Mr. Patterson was united in marriage
in Kings Valley, Benton county, Ore.,
in 1859, to Caroline Tatom. who was
born in Missouri. Her father, Richard
Tatum, a native of Tennessee, was a
blacksmith by trade. He removed to
Illinois and later to Cedar county. Mo.
In 1853 he removed to Oregon, locating
at Buena Vista, and later removed to
Kings Valley, settling on a donation
claim of three hundred and twenty acres.
Subsequently selling this farm he
removed to Rickreall, Oregon, where he
died at the age of sixty-seven years,
having been actively engaged in farming
for many years.]*****

She was married to Francis Austine
Patterson, October 3, 1858, in Kings
Valley. They moved to Polk County in
1865. Settling five miles north of
Independence 48 years ago and had
since made their home here.

They were the parent's of ten children,
nine of whom survive. They are: Gov.
Isaac Lee Patterson of Eola, Polk Co.,
Henry R. Patterson, William H.
Patterson, Pink Charles Patterson,
Doc P. Patter, son, Mrs. Maud L.
[Patterson] Arthur, all of Portland.
George S. Patterson of Pendleton;
Narcise P. Patterson of Toppenish, Wash.;
and Allen P. Patterson of Prosser. There
is also one brother, Soloman Tatom of
Philomath.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00
o'clock with interment in the Odd
Fellows' cemetery.
