Charles, age 23, married Hannah Schock, who was only 16 years old, on December 17th 1888. He was living in Summit Hill and working as a laborer at the time of his wedding. It must have been a shotgun wedding as his first child "John" was born less then 6 months later. He later started a farm in West Penn Township on Pine Hill Road, Schuylkill County, PA. near the village of Snyders (pictured here is their home and farm which is abandoned). He died from Brights Disease at 3:30 p.m. His death certificate was signed by Dr. E.E. Wiesner who was attending to him from October 15th 1908 until his death 10 months later. This is very curious because Dr. William Zehner was his first cousin. Both doctors tended to the citizens of the West Penn Township area. Why his cousin was not in his care is certainly a mystery to me.
It is also interesting to note that in 1880, at the age of 14, Charles was living with the widower Solomon Shafer and his son Alvin and his wife as a servant. Their neighbors were George and Lavina Breiner whose son Lewis would go on to marry Charles' sister Rosa.
His grave, along with that of his wife's and baby daughter Minnie and youngest son Fred, who managed the family farm his whole life, is at the bottom the hill close to the road. A few yards away is his mother and sister who are to the left and diagonally from him. Except for his son John (who is buried in Lehighton) all his children are buried in this cemetery.
