The Dalles Chronicle - Sep. 19, 2012

Vera Anice Kessler, 95, died Sept. 17, 2012, at the local hospital in The Dalles, Ore.
She was born Dec. 27, 1916 in Rocky, Polk County, Ark., to Leonard Joseph Vaught and Birdie Lee Mayberry Vaught.
At the age of 4, she and her family moved to Norwood, Colo. Right after her high school graduation from Norwood she met Stanley Smokie Truman Kessler. On May 16, 1936, they eloped and were married in Moab, Utah. He preceded her in death in October 1956.
She was the mother of Linda Jeanne Kessler and Truellen Trudy Miles. Between the two daughters, she had two granddaughters, Denise Herman and Stephanie Gomes; four grandsons, Richard Miles, David Gomes, Michael Miles, and Craig Miles; 10 great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons; plus one great-great-granddaughter and one great-great-grandson.
Her career in federal civil service began at Tinker Field Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, Okla., when her husband was called to serve his country for World War II. She worked in Procurement in Washington and Nevada and retired as an engineering technician from Bonneville Power Administration in Portland, Ore., around 1984.
Intellectually curious and a meticulous record keeper (even in her 90s), she loved to learn. She was a Christian who supported many religious and charitable organizations.
A graveside service will be held at Sept. 19, at 1 p.m., at Threemile Cemetery with Pastor Nate Warren of Emmanuel Baptist Church officiating.
