Doris was born in Camden, N.J., the eldest daughter of the late Benjamin Francis Butler, Jr. and Stachi Balon Butler. She was predeceased by her brother, Benjamin F. Butler III and her sister, Barbara Butler Kilpatrick.
Doris is survived by the two greatest loves of her life, husband James D. "Dave" Carr, Jr. and son, Karl W. Askew II. Doris and Dave had been together from September 1979 and although inseparable, did not marry until August 26, 2006. Together they traveled to many countries overseas and in the continental United States. Although they loved traveling, Doris often said "the best part about going away was coming back home." She loved nothing better than being at home with Dave, Karl and her beloved Abyssinian, Alexandra. She was a Virginia Master Gardener and enjoyed working with the trees and plants in her yard. Best of all, she enjoyed celebrating birthdays, holidays and other occasions with her large extended family and friends.
Other survivors are brother, Donald Richard Butler; sisters, Virginia Butler Gustavson and husband Walter of Chesapeake, Va., Sandra Butler Vogt of Front Royal, Va., Carol Butler May and husband Larry of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Susan Butler Williams and fiancé Gary Ballard of Suffolk, Va.; sister-in-law Lois T. Butler of Portsmouth, Va.; and brother-in-law John B. Kilpatrick of Rocky Mount, N.C. There are many nieces and nephews and their children, all of whom are loved dearly. Alexandra also survives her.
Doris graduated from St. Paul's High School in Portsmouth, Va. She worked for Southern Salt, Inc. for 42 years and rose through the ranks to become Corporate Secretary, Vice President and General Manager. Doris was elected Secretary of the Hampton Roads Foreign Commerce Club and was made an Honorary Member after retirement.
