OAKWOOD - Charles Leonard Claypool, 80, of Oakwood, died at 1 a.m. Thursday (June 19, 1997) at the Danville VA Medical Center.

He was born June 4, 1917, in Alvin, Ill., the son of Burton Andrew and Maggie M. (Hanley) Claypool. He married Mary J. Wainwright on Dec. 12, 1943, in Oakwood, Ill. She survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Wilma D. (Calvin) Prescott of Steep Falls, Maine; a son, Leonard A. Claypool of Defiance, Ohio; a brother, Ralph Claypool of Williamsport, Ind.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and eight sisters.

He had been a farmer and worked for Central Foundry, retiring in 1977. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theater. He had attended the Alvin Christian Church. He was a member of the Oakwood American Legion and the UAW #579. He enjoyed bowling, gardening, watching TV game shows and playing cards. He loved his family and all of his grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21 at Johnson-Lakeside Funeral Home in Oakwood; Officiating: Rev. Herb Bottger; Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Friday, June 20 at the funeral home; Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post #210; Memorials: Leukemia Foundation.
