Fatal Bathing Accident. -- A painful bathing accident occurred on Friday morning [15 Jul 1887] at Kirkcaldy harbour. About seven o'clock a young man named Robert Milne, a draper, along with two companions, went in to bathe at the point of the West Pier. Milne, after being a short time in the water, was observed trying to catch hold of a rope attached to a small boat, but failed to do so, and fell helplessly back into the water. One of his companions, named Simpson, managed to get hold of him; but on Milne seizing him by the leg he shook himself clear and made for the pier. The grappling irons were then procured and the body of Milne brought to the shore. Restoratives were applied, but without avail. Deceased was about nineteen years of age, and was a son of Mrs. Milne, of the Temperance Hotel, of Tolbooth Street. The funeral took place on Sunday and was very largely attended. A number of Milne's comrades of the 5th batt., 1st F.A.V., [Fife Artillery Volunteers] of which he was an enthusiastic member, and of his shopmates, as well as the general public, turned out to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased. At the gate, and also inside, of the Kirkcaldy Cemetery, where the interment took place, a large number of the public gathered to witness the funeral. The Rev. Mr. Campbell, Parish Church, offered up prayer at the grave, and on the coffin, covered with beautiful wreathes of flowers, being consigned to the earth the sad ceremony was brought to a close.
