Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. He played Major League baseball as a pitcher for nineteen seasons (1948 to 1966) with the Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs. Debuting in 1948, he became one of the most dominating right handed pitchers of the 1950s. His breakout season was his third in 1950, when he went 20 and 11, and helped a young Phillies team dubbed the "Whiz Kids" to capture the National League Pennant for the first time since 1915. In the 1950 World Series against the New York Yankees, he started Game 2, and became locked in a stellar pitchers' duel with New York's Allie Reynolds, who eventually won the game 2 to 1. Despite being swept 4 games to none by the Yankees, Roberts' "Whiz Kid" team remains a beloved team in Phillies lore. Named to his first All-Star game that year, he would be selected to seven National League All-Star squads, and started the 1950, 1951, 1953 and 1954 games. From 1950 to 1955 he made an incredible run of winning 20+ games, topping with a 28 and 7 record in 1953. In fourteen seasons with the Phillies, he won 234 games, which currently is second all-time for the team behind Steve Carlton's 241. Sold to the Yankees after the 1961 season, he never made the team, and signed by the Baltimore Orioles after the start of the 1962 season. He would play a year and a half with the Orioles, then finish out his career with the Astros and Cubs. His career totals were 286 Wins (good for 27th place all-time in Major League baseball history), 245 Losses, 676 Games Played, 305 Complete Games Pitched, 45 Shutouts, 2,357 Strikeouts, and a 3.41 career Earned Run Average. In 1976 he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. His Number 36 has been retired by the Phillies.
