EMERY, John G. -- Obit -- Minneapolis Tribune, MN, 1893, March 11, 1893, page 3, FULL OF YEARS
John G. Emery, a resident of Minneapolis since July, 1887, died at his home, 716 Sixth avenue south, Thursday afternoon, after a ong illness. He had practically been confined to his home since October, the disease being a chronic difficulty of long standing, the immediate cause of death being exhaustion. Mr. Emery was born at Orono, Me., May 20, 1828. He spent thee earlier years of his life in that state and territory contiguous, and in 1856 removed to Peshtigo, Wis., where he erected and operated saw mills for the Peshtigo Lumber Company. He remained in Wisconsin until 1861 and then went to Wenona, Mich. now West Bay City, building the big Sage mill at that place. He afterwards erected the McGraw mill at South Bay City, at that time the largest mill in the world. After the structure burned Mr. Emery rebuilt it. At a subsequent period he entered into the pattnership with M. Garland, of Bay City, in the manufacture and sale of sawmill machinery, the firm of Emery & Garland having an enviable reputation all over the country. In 1881 the partnership was disolved, and three years later Mr. Emery came to Mineapolis and formed the Minnesota Granite and Polishiing Company, with which he has been connected and has managed since. The deceased was a man of great mechanical talent and devoted much of his life to a study of the problems and theories presented in this line. In this capacity he became known to and retained intimate acquaintance with many of the prominent mill owners and operatores in the United States. He was also a man of sterling worth in the business and social circles in which he moved. He leaves a widow, one son J.G. Emery Jr., and two daughters, Kate and Helen, all residing here except Mr. Emery, whose home is at Miskegon, Mich. The funeral will take place Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock, from the residence. The interment will be at Lakewood.

Note: Body moved from Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN on August 9, 1907.
