William Edward Thornton was the son of Jeptha and Martha Ragsdale Thornton of Missouri. He was married to Susannah Chenoweth on Feb 18, 1858 in DeKalb Co., MO.

The family crossed the plains from Missouri to Oregon in 1868 by ox team. They located on Oak Creek, in Douglas County, OR in 1868. They lived in the following places: California; Olalla, OR; Mayville, OR; Dillard, OR; and Springfield, OR.

William Thornton was converted in 1869 and baptised in the Oak Creek Baptist Church (OR). Soon after, he was ordained as a deacon and did some missionary work in Coos County. After going to eastern Oregon he was ordained in the Mayville Baptist Church in 1890, did church work in eastern Washington and Idaho, and then back to Oregon (Springfield, Elmira and Cresswell).

William and Susannah had 11 children: Samuel, Mary (died young), John, Martha (died young), Elderada (Carter, Brosi), Orville, Nancy (Watson), Sarah (Wiley), Joseph, Olivea (Murry) and Bertha (Westrope).
