The Oklahoman, Oklahoma City, August 6, 1944:
Services for Lieut. Lelan A. "Alex" Pope, 20, who was killed Thursday when a C-47 transport plane crashed near Naper, NE, will be announced by the Garrison Funeral Home. Pope was one of 28 Army men killed in the crash and among 24 Army pilots being transferred to the Pierre (NE) Army Air Base. Pope with his twin brother attended Putnam Heights grade school and both graduated the same year from Classen High School.

After graduation, Lelan was employed the Thompson Products Co, and was branch manager here at the time he enlisted in the Air Corps with his brother in January 1943. Both received their wings at Foster Field at Victoria, TX, as the same time. Lt. M. E. Pope was sent to Sedalia, MO, and is pilot of a C-47 hospital ship (aircraft), while Alex was sent to Bruning, NE.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs Gerdis Pope, 1513 W. Park, for who many years has been secretary to A. H. Proctor, division superintendent of Magnolia Petroleum Corp, and a sister, Mrs R. H. Turncliff, San Marcus, TX.
