Melvin P. Behrendt, age 91, a Manitowoc resident, died Monday morning, December 12, 2011 at his residence.

He was born on September 17, 1920 in Manitowoc, son of the late Paul & Mathilda (VandeVelden) Behrendt. Melvin was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Class of 1938.

He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving in the Signal Corp. during World War II in North Africa & Italy from 1942 to 1945. On September 17, 1949 he married the former Margaret LeClair in Two Rivers.

Melvin was employed with the Street Department for the City of Manitowoc, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the AmVets Post #99 and V.F.W. Otto Oas Post #659.

Survivors include his wife: Margaret Behrendt, Manitowoc; his children and their families: Mary & Jon Zboralski of Manitowoc and their children: John, Amy & Sarah; Irene & William Taylor Jr. of Sheboygan and their family: Jennifer Gozdowiak, Anne & Amanda; Paul Behrendt, Manitowoc; Peter Behrendt, Madison; Mark Behrendt of Manitowoc and his children: Rachel, Rebecca & Charlotte; Jane & John Solkowski of Manitowoc and their children: Claire, Lauren & Abigail; five great grandchildren: Jack, Jay, Blake, Libby & Jameson; one sister: Mercedes Mullins, Kaukauna; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Rosemary & Claude Richmond, Two Rivers, Olive Weber, Racine, Margaret LeClair, Katherine LeClair, Patsy & George Schwerma, Thomas LeClair, Eileen & William Mosuch and Roy & Shirley Vigue, all of Two Rivers. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was also preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers-in-law: Eleanor and Lester Hanson, Elaine and Nic Everard, Hazel and Edward Maresch and Clifford Mullins; six brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law: Eugene LeClair, Charles LeClair, Louis LeClair, Richard Weber, Cele LeClair, James LeClair, Mary Jane and Donald Nejedlo.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2011 at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen with entombment at Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc. Graveside Military Rites will be accorded by AmVets Post #99.
