The family lived in West Virginia for several years before moving to New York City. He was a gifted musician who performed with a band in New York in the 1930s. He joined the Army and served as a musician during World War II. Afterward he worked as an electrical engineer for a railroad and also entertained at a masonic lodge in New York.
