Daughter of Isabella D. Saffell (1844-1927) and her first husband, Rev. Rufus Kendrick Scruggs (1837-c1867), of E. TN and AL. Following her father's untimely death, Sara, along with her mother and brother, moved to Watsonville, CA, where Isabella married fellow Tennessean Abram Wiley Rodgers. Sara Scruggs attended the Irving Institute, an exclusive school for young women in San Francisco. (A. W. Rodgers, a shipper by trade, died of yellow fever in Mexico in 1883, and Isabella moved her family to SF and was hired to teach at the institute several years later.) In 1895, Sara married Dr. Samuel Saffell Bogle, a physician, in Pacific Grove, CA. (He too had moved from his native TN some two yrs. earlier and was then living in Monterey.) The couple settled in Santa Rosa and had two children, Marion Meredith and John W. The Bogles were divorced sometime before 1916, and Sara and children moved to Berkeley. Marion graduated from UC, Berkeley, while Sara worked as a house mother at a university sorority. In 1920, Marion Bogle married Allan Sproul (1896-1978), who would later become the president of the NY Federal Reserve Bank. (His brother, Robert Gordon Sproul, would eventually become the president of the entire University of California system.)
